Igniting Curiosity, Inspiring Minds: Meet the Inspiring Educators at VOA High School

May 7, 2024

This Teachers' Appreciation Week, we celebrate the unsung heroes who tirelessly dedicate themselves to nurturing young minds, fostering growth, and sparking creativity. At VOA High School, teachers are more than educators; they are mentors, advocates, and champions of student success. They create learning environments that inspire and empower students to reach their full potential, regardless of where they are in their education journey. Meet two of VOA High School’s exceptional teachers, Mr. Johnny Hedgepeth and Emily Gleason, who embody the spirit of dedication and passion in education.

Mr. Johnny Hedgepeth: A Math Teacher with a Heart for the Community

Johnny Hedgepeth, affectionately known as "Mr. H," has been a dedicated math teacher at VOA High School since 2015. Originally from the Crown Heights Community in Brooklyn, New York, Johnny has a strong background in serving underserved communities. He holds degrees in Public Affairs and Deaf and Hearing-Impaired Education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the Hubert Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Johnny's journey in education began with obtaining teaching licenses in Social Studies and Math from Eastern Washington University. Since 2006, he has been committed to teaching students at alternative learning centers, including Fairview, Osseo, and Wellstone International High School. His passion for supporting students extends beyond the classroom, as he has also worked as a student counselor and advocate for Trio in partnership with the University of Minnesota.

Johnny's dedication to VOA High School stems from his deep-seated belief in the importance of giving back to the community. He finds immense fulfillment in supporting students who are facing difficult times, viewing his role as a means to contribute where it is most needed. This commitment allows Johnny to fulfill his desire to positively impact the lives of others, making a meaningful difference each day.

When he's not at school, Mr. H can be found doing what he loves most—dancing! His commitment to his students and his community shines through in all he does, making him a beloved teacher at VOA High School.

Ms. Emily Gleason: Igniting a Passion for Science

Emily Gleason, VOA High School's Science teacher, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. With a PhD in biology, Emily has dedicated her career to science education. Prior to teaching at VOA High School, she worked for a biotechnology education company, developing curriculum and hands-on labs for students of all ages.

"I've always gotten a lot of joy out of teaching and working with kids, so I wanted to give teaching a try," says Emily. She loves getting students engaged in hands-on activities and encourages everyone to embrace their inner scientist. VOA HS students regularly note how patient and kind Emily is, recognizing her genuine interest in their success.

Working at VOA High School has given Emily the opportunity to share her excitement and joy for science with others. She finds joy in teaching high school science, exploring questions we don't yet have the answer to, and learning how things work.

Today, and every day, we celebrate Mr. H, Emily, and all the incredible teachers who make a difference in the lives of their students. Thank you for your dedication, passion, and unwavering support!
