In Hennepin County, efforts to enhance student well-being and prevent suicide are making a significant impact thanks to School-Based Mental Health programs. Recent research by the University of Minnesota shows that these programs have led to fewer self-reported suicide attempts and decreased involvement in suspension and the juvenile justice system among 6th to 12th graders.
VOA's Vona Center for Mental Health is proud to be a part of this transformative initiative by providing School-Based Services to over 122 students in Minnesota. These services offer comprehensive mental health support within schools, recognizing the critical link between mental health and academic success.
Personal stories like Jackie's illustrate the profound impact of School-Based Mental Health programs. Jackie, a student at VOA High School, found solace and support through these services despite facing various challenges including trauma, family responsibilities, and academic pressure.
Despite the obstacles posed by the pandemic and social unrest, Jackie, alongside her dedicated therapist Tara, navigated through adversity. With VOA's support, Jackie received essential technology for remote learning and telemedicine sessions, ensuring continuity of care.
Together, Tara and Jackie navigated through life's complexities, developing strategies to manage trauma symptoms and academic pressures. Weekly sessions empowered Jackie to improve her communication skills, set boundaries, and prioritize her schoolwork and well-being.
Even after graduation, Tara continued to support Jackie in pursuing her career goals and vocational training. Jackie's story underscores the importance of school-linked mental health services as a vital resource for students, especially those lacking access to other forms of therapy.
At VOA we believe that increased access to mental health services and supports in schools is vital to creating and sustaining safe schools and fostering environments where all students have the opportunity to learn and thrive.
